Robin Gist’s first major work in the recording industry was with twice ARIA nominated Australian rock band Girl Overboard as a guitarist and songwriter. Having formed Girl Overboard with Lisa Schouw in 1988, Robin played a major role as songwriter, arranger and programmer. The band achieved success with their debut album "Paint A Picture" reaching Gold status in Australia. This project received ARIA nominations for Best Debut Single and Best Australian Video in 1989.

After the break up of the band in 1993, Robin began developing his passion for music production and engineering under the mentorship of producers Charles Fisher (Hoodoo Gurus, Savage Garden) and Phil Punch (Slim Dusty, Ed Kuepper).

Robin set up his own production facility, dVs Studios and began assisting with a variety of artists that came to record at Electric Avenue Studios including John Williamson, Graeme Connors, The Falling Joys, The Clouds, Supagroop, Even, Rosemary Rae and Tumbleweed. He provided programming, sampling and additional engineering on the 1994 album "deeper" for Australian band DIG. He also worked with producer Charles Fisher and ARIA winning engineer Paul McKercher on the Hoodoo Gurus album "BlueCave".
